U.S. President Barack Obama ended a sometimes difficult trip to Asia on Thursday by figuratively embracing South Korea and literally embracing its president.

Mr. Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, whose administrations worked closely to respond to aggressive weapons testing by North Korea earlier this year, reaffirmed in a summit meeting their common views on security matters, and began to close a trade matter that has divided them.

The two leaders hugged when Mr. Obama arrived at the presidential Blue House and again at the end of their postsummit news conference, a setting where usually a handshake or pat on the back will do.

'Our alliance has never been stronger,' Mr. Obama said in a speech to U.S. troops a short time after his meeting with Mr. Lee.

For Mr. Obama, the 20 hours he spent in South Korea were some of the easiest of a weeklong trip to Asia.

In Japan, he met new government leaders trying to cope with a controversy over U.S. military bases. At multinational summits in Singapore, he faced criticism about U.S. trade policies. And in China, he encountered leaders unwilling to give him the stage before the Chinese people they had provided to his two predecessors.

Looking back on the week as the presidential entourage was about to leave South Korea, one of Mr. Obama's top advisers, David Axelrod, told reporters, 'We didn't come halfway across the world for ticker-tape parades. We came here to lay a foundation for progress. We've done that, so we believe it was a successful trip.'

In Seoul, Mr. Obama and Mr. Lee showed they remain united in their approach to dealing with North Korea, which has troubled the U.S., South Korea and other countries with its relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Mr. Obama announced a date -- Dec. 8 -- for a visit by the U.S. envoy to North Korea, Stephen Bosworth, to Pyongyang to discuss the North's return to the six-nation aid-for-disarmament talks that also involve China, Japan, Russia and South Korea. But he said he and Mr. Lee want to break North Korea's cycle of acting belligerently and then expecting rewards for turning nice.

'North Korea behaves in a provocative fashion, and then is willing to return to talks,' Mr. Obama said, describing the North's playbook. 'It talks for a while and then leaves the talks seeking further concessions, and there's never actually any progress on the core issues.'

He said the U.S. will end sanctions on North Korea if it 'is taking serious steps around the nuclear issue.'

In response to a question, Mr. Obama also said the U.S. and its allies will draft a package of sanctions 'over the next several weeks' to show Iran, another country pursing nuclear weapons, 'the importance of having consequences.'

Mr. Obama also reached out to Mr. Lee over the free-trade agreement that the two countries reached in April 2007 but haven't ratified. In the U.S. last year, it got caught up in election politics. Some Democrats believe the pact doesn't do enough to even out the trade imbalance between the two countries, particularly in automobiles.

But on Thursday, Mr. Obama asked for no favors from Mr. Lee and appeared grateful for the friendly welcome at the end of his Asia sojourn. When Mr. Lee presented Mr. Obama with a gift of a taekwondo outfit, Mr. Obama recalled lessons he took in the martial art when he was young. The two men then acted out taekwondo poses as cameras snapped.
